Baines' left foot

Player Valuation: £90m
Brazilian legend Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, was admitted to Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo on Friday with gastrointestinal bleeding.

According to the hospital, the haemorrhage was caused by high blood pressure in the vein that carries blood from the digestive system to the liver.

Socrates pictured with Brazilian great Zico.

Socrates captained the 1982 World Cup team and is considered one of the best footballing sides in history. Ultimately the campaign proved unsuccessful, with Brazil losing to Italy in their final second phase group game.

He is still regarded as one of the greatest midfielders to grace the game. Standing at 6 ft 4, he was renowned for his two footed ability, vision and his goalscoring ability, scoring 172 league goals in 297 games between 1978 and 1984 for Corinthians, the team he is best known for representing during his career.

Despite not starting his international career until he was 25, he won 60 caps for his country, scoring 22 goals and also competed in the 1986 world cup. Delaying his representation for the national team, Socrates instead concentrated on becoming a Doctor and since his retirement from football he has achieved a doctorate in philosophy and continued to practice medicine until his illness.

Just a small tribute to a true footballing great. Despite being too young to have witnessed any of his career, he and Zico are two of my favourite Brazilians of all time.

Here at the 1982 World Cup, he scored one of his most famous goals.

Im too young to have witnessed his talents live too but even just by watching dvds you can see that he was some player and his name always reminds me of Bill and Ted. Get well soon So-crates.

Actually they lost to Italy in the final second phase group game.
Great player. His younger brother 'Rai' was pretty handy aswell.
Hoping he makes a full recovery.

I must fcuk up my fachts a thousand times a day mate. Just pure coincidence that my long term memory is far better than my short term thingy

We've got Aristotle on our books. Wasn't he Socrates's nephew

Aristote Nsiala (No "L" in his first name). Saw him outside Goodison on Saturday in a suit, walked to the shop and back, nobody but me and my brother apparently recognised who he was.
What did I tell you

Brazil '82 - best team never to win the WC? (Or maybe Holland '74, which I cant remember that much about).

Hope he gets well soon. Cracking player and named after Greek Philosopher, Plato.

That Brazil game against Soviet Union in '82 - I think it was Socrates who teed himself up on the edge of the box and volleyed it in...either him or Zico. Always sticks in my mind that.

it was the left winger long haired feller all left peg flew in the top corner ,they were getting beat 1.0 won 2.1 ithink
