With one month to go until the World Cup in Brazil, the football nation has appointed its first female referee. Fernanda Colombo Uliana has been granted FIFA official status by the refereeing committee of the Brazilian Football Confederation and officiated in her first game this weekend, as assistant referee between Atletico Mineiro and Cruzeiro in Belo Horizonte.

Good on her. The girl who runs the line in our football is better than any of the blokes. Look at her in that first picture, all flirty.

Don't think everyone's a fan, thoughlol

South American Football - Female official harshly slammed for debut performance
Fernanda Colombo Uliana's debut as an assistant referee in Brazil's top flight ended in controversy on Sunday after she denied visitors Cruzeiro a last-gasp chance to equalise against derby rivals Atletico Mineiro with a debateable offside call.

She has since come under attack from various quarters for her performance, which seems to be particularly harsh given that it was her first match as an official at that level.

Cruzeiro were 2-1 down with just minutes left when Allison was put through on goal, but Uliana raised her flag for offside, a decision that replays appeared to suggest was incorrect.

Uliana, who had previously officiated in Brazil cup matches but was making her Serie A debut on Sunday, was cheered off the pitch by home fans but subjected to the ire of Cruzeiro players and director of football Alexandre Mattos.

Cruzeiro striker Marcelo Moreno continued to protest after the final whistle and got a red card while Mattos was scathing about Uliana's performance.

"That assistant is pretty, but she's not prepared for this," Mattos was quoted as saying by Brazil's Globo on its website.

"The fans shout and she gets it wrong. She's pretty but you have to be good at your job. If she's pretty, she should go and pose for Playboy."

That's bang out of order. 99% of referees get things wrong constantly, and almost all of them look incompetent. Whether that's due to the difficulty of their job or actual incompetence I don't know, though my money's on both. Her being a woman has nothing to do with it -- she's got a pair of eyes and the ability to run up and down the touchline. The amount of sexism in football is piss poor.

Couldn't agree more.

You're right there mate, but I think your typical Brazilian male might have a different point of view:D
