A major investigation is under way after an 11-year-old boy managed to board a flight for Rome from Manchester airport without a passport, ticket or boarding pass. It is understood he had earlier run away from home.

The boy got through a security screen by mingling with a family going through terminal 1 yesterday afternoon. He was discovered while the plane was in mid-air.

A number of airline staff have been suspended.

Russell Craig from Manchester Airport said they were taking the matter extremely seriously

Some suit from jet2 (?) was being interviewed on the radio and he said "we're now starting to do head counts on all flights before take off".

Good job its not Ryanair, they'd probably charge extra for counting you.

They should be doing that anyway before take off surely.

That's what I thought, but apparently not. tbf I've seen trolley dollys on prooer airlines struggling to count beyond 20 so jet2 probably decided to save time by not bothering and just announcing over the tannoy "if anyone extra or missing is on board can they please press the call button after which we'll ignore you"

I probably heard the interview wrong but this has a better #fumefactor
