You have to feel sorry for him, but I must admit I feel more sorry for his mates who went to look for him and suffered as a result....

Having read that really long article posted earlier, why exactly have we traded 5 taliban for a deserter? The bloke was stupid enough to walk off into the Afghanistan countryside unarmed purely out of choice, and because of his actions 5 vile, dangerous people have been released.

There is quite a bit of reasoning behind it.

For a start, reintroducing former senior leaders into the mix will destabilize the current top level of the Taliban - especially as the amount of US surveillance activity and the whole drones thing will have made them all very paranoid already. Who is to say that they wont think one of the five hasnt been turned?

That and they all had iPhones surgically implanted in their abdominal cavity for tracking via find my iphone

should have left him there, leaves every USA solider/ citizen as a target for kidnap, from every terror group that want to free its members in captivity, he made his choice and paid the price ,in the future others will now pay the price for it without the choice.

Why did he leave his post? Doesn't sound like anyone tried to stop or help him.
I've heard it wasn't the first time.

He apparently left his post once while stationed in the US and once before in Afghanistan. He came back both times. So perhaps it was his way to clear his head? And it was something they knew about?

No idea honestly. Which is why I think it's a bit much that everyone seems so certain one way or the other. We don't know what happened. So bring him home, make sure he's ok, find out if he deserted, and deal with that appropriately - outside of the context of being a POW.
