The wife is currently surfing the web for next years holiday. Probably narrowed it down to Borneo or Vietnam. I'm sure some of you will have been to one or the other (or even both). Which would you recommend.
Ideally looking for beaches, relaxing, jungle/wilderness, scenery, mingling with locals, markets etc - the usual stuff that middle aged people do on holiday

where in Borneo ?

Bako national park not far from Kuching in the Sarawak region has got some impressive jungles and trails

can book a couple of nights there or you can do it as a day trip

don't know vietnam very well

If it helps I've done a bit of travelling but haven't been to Vietnam. Everyone I have met along the way that has said it is unbelievable and ridiculously cheap.

What about Cambodia?

Both Borneo and Vietnam are great choices.

Vietnam is far more touristy (compared to Borneo) but not at the Thailand level of tourism...yet. I would probably go to Vietnam before it's swamped and a sell out. Even now it's really rammed around the famous places - EG Halong Bay.

Borneo gives you far more scope with the Jungle treks and stuff, but it's "rustic" so as long as you don't mind slumming it here and there its fine.

Would pick Cambodia over Vietnam all day. Vietnam is probably blessed with some better scenery, but the locals are absolute beauts who just see tourists as prime rip-off material, whether you're a flash-the-cash high-end tourist or a backpacker, they'll be looking to fleece you at any opportunity, usually through the use of the dual currency system they utilise. Got dollars? They'll find a crappy FX rate and claim all their prices are in VND. Got Dong? Everything suddenly becomes USD only and yet another crappy FX rate will surface.

Vietnam is also incredibly linear, it's such a long thin country that it takes a good while getting from HCM City - Nha Trang - Hue - Hanoi.

Cambodia has Angkor Wat which trumps pretty much anything Vietnam has to offer on the temple front, the locals are top notch, the country is dripping in ancient and post-war history, plus it's cheap. Really cheap. Phnom Penh is a lovely, Siem Reap also. Avoid Battambang, the Chelmsford of SE Asia.

Only thing that's a bit lacking on in Cambodia is the beaches, Sihanoukville is a big iffy, but you could always get yourself over to Phu Quoc Island (v close to Cambodia but actually a Vietnamese Island). It's lovely.

Borneo, from what I have seen, is effectively an Orang Utan park and loads of forest. Not going to get a lot on the culture side, I would imagine.

echoing the Cambodia shouts here, I coupled it with a trip to Borneo last year and bought everyone in the family a Rolex (and I know they were real Rolexes because they came in real Rolex plastic bags)

very cheap Air Asia flights from Kuching to the Penh, get on it chums, get right on it
