I ask for your opinions on him as an outsider to his National team days as I didn't start following football until '93...thoughts? Good England manager? Missed? I liked him during his time at Newcastle, TBH.

What a lot of people won't know is he was ridiculed as England manager until the '90 World Cup and opinions changed. In the 80's there should of been only two England managers, either Kendall or Clough. Imagine that, having the choice of two world class England managers! Robson turned it round though and was a thoroughly decent bloke.

Hence why I ask as I found it hard not to like the guy for whatever reason...I think because he seemed to have a bit of piss and vinegar in him but, as always, there's differing opinion. Just interested in the general vibe on him from those that went through his time with the National side.

Always thought he was a top manager and knew the game inside out..... Tactically he was no Terry Venables but who is ? ..... Very highly spoken of by most who played for him.

Was a nice chap, if wasn't for a couple of penalties would probably of won Italia 90, The Argie's did nothing in the final v Germany.

That team was lucky to get past both Belgium and Cameroon, they came much closer to going out earlier and having a disappointing tournament than winning it.

Spot on, people forget he blundered along at international level offering to resign at one point. He made a massive cock up including an injured Bryan Robson for the Mexico WC only Beardsley stepping in saved his bacon as the player Robson predictably disintegrated. Italia 90 he insanely played a sweeper system before players rebelled telling him they couldn't play it and he held back Gazza far too long.

Robson transformed himself into a media savvy operator after working abroad becoming the games favourite uncle but after Ipswich he did absolutely nothing in this country.

Terry venables is the best we'v had in a long time. Shame it was cut short more to do with football politics than football on the pitch.

Bobby Robson had already resigned/sacked before 'Italia 90' think that tells you everything really. Thoroughly nice chap tho and was a very good manger (ask mourinho!)

I always liked Sven tbh.

He used to frustrate me with some of his selections prior to italia 90. Viv Anderson used to be favored ahead of Gary Stevens a lot. Bryan Robson was a favourite of his reminding me a little of Moyes and Neville. As allready mentioned things kind of fell into place due to injury and suspensions at the 86 and 90 world cups more by luck than judgement. Euro 88 sits rather uncomfortably in between these tournaments for me.

They did ride their luck in earlier rounds but it's often said you need some luck along the way to win a tournament, I still think if we'd won the pens in the semi we would have beat Argentina in the final. I'm on a hiding to nothing here really arguing an unprovable point.

I think he learned a lot from the Mexico tournament and things started to move forward after that. It took a while and by the time the 1990 world cup came round he had Gascoigne and was brave enough to use him and use him properly. He narrowly won some big games there but narrowly lost in the end also. I think it just shows the margins of success and failure are very narrow. England were an asset to the world cup tournaments he led them into......
