That was his ONE good one. He was highly skilled, I believe best as a writer? His joke delivery was far from good.

I remember my dad telling me years ago he was one of the best in terms of pure wit as he could come up with a gag on the spot without needing a script.

I'd heard he had excellent recall. Rather than creating something on the spot he just had an encyclopedia of gags stored and just picked one out that was suitable for the moment.

I vaguely recall his joke book getting stolen or lost - had every gag he had in there.

He did write many of those though and you still have to be brilliant to remember them all and then pick the right one at the right time.

Amazing comedian.
