I know I wasn't perusing brochures for West Africa, for my next jollies, before auld Bob piped up trying to raise a few quid to help them out.

Not necessarily a good thing. May have been better if he hadn't done anything. Especially given that it's entirely possible that the money Band Aid raised originally helped extend a civil war.

Yes, he actually harmed the long term prosperity of an entire continent by not listening to legit concerns about what he was doing in the pursuit of his own ego.

He was fairly warned by those in the know in advance of doing this - the net result is the impression that a bunch, smug celebrities think Africa is the dump of the world and feel sorry for them, like a beggar in the street.

It may be done from naivety more than malice, but I can't applaud Geldof even the tiniest bit for this. He got it completely wrong.
