Bloody Sunday verdict

was evidence not given by the paras under immunity? it would surely be inadmissible in trial under the circumstances surely? i'm sure the families will launch civil cases anyway so if the government thought wasting £200 million would draw a line under it they would be mistaken. anyway can't we play the 'spirit of the Good Friday agreement' here?

the 'The report also said Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness was probably armed with a submachine gun on the day and while it was possible he fired, there was insufficient evidence to make a finding on this.' bit was galling too as this individual is too busy being deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland.

anyway i hope there is change left for the inquiry into bloody omagh, bloody warrington, bloody enniskillen, bloody brighton, bloody birmingham........................

This wasn't about cheap point scoring mate, these families have been through enough.

Take your orange bills off just for one moment you blert.

Took a while for this. The key thing here for me is where it says "What happened should never, ever have happened." Obviously not. The families should now seek justice.

I take your point about Good Friday and the spirit of reconcilliation - letting things drop with this verdict. But - and leaving aside any McGuinness role on the day - if you're one of the family of the dead you're not (after years of having a black mark placed over your murdered relatives name and blocked at every turn by the Government and military) going to let it go that easy.

Agree with chico too: not really the thread to be bringing in the whole of the Troubles.

no i agree largely with this but if it was an attempt to draw a line under the event i'm sure it will just reopen wounds. a lot of the paras acted on orders and many are retired and fearful, they should not be hung out to dry imo; the government gets the army to do its work. it was the lead up to the days events (soldiers being murdered in the previous two years) and the actions of men like mcguinness on the day created a very tense atmosphere where the reaction of the paras was well over the top. thats why i linked it to the troubles it was/is a product of them imo.

i hope it does bring genuine closure to the families involved.

It'd certainly have ramifications for prosecutions of soldiers serving today in Afghanistan (and before that in Iraq), although even the British PM today didn't rule out independent criminal proceedings. Seems unlikely though. Dont know what could be done in terms of compensation/recognition.
