About ten years ago I remember reading a profile in 4-4-2 magazine about a blind French goalkeeper from the 1950’s.

Basically the guy had a degenerative site disease and lost his site gradually over a number of years until in his early to mid 30’s he was completely blind. However he continued playing professional French football for another 4 or 5 years with the aid of two guide dogs who basically sat behind each post and acted as his guides for dealing with shots, crosses, one on one’s and so on by barking commands to him so he knew when to dive/come out, etc, etc.

I’ve got a feeling the guy played mainly in the French Second Division, although he may have had a couple of seasons in the First Division, but I can’t for the life of me remember his name, but have a feeling it may have been Toulouse he played for (I could be wrong though).

I’ve told some friends about this who think I am making it all up, but I definitely I read about him and it wasn’t on April Fools Day! Surely it can’t just be me who remembers him?!

Yeah, I've never heard of it and google turns up nothing.

I could buy it as a victorian thing, as they had players with glasses and broken arms and who were 80 stone etc.

But the 50s in france? That's the era of Kopa and Fontaine, they were quite serious about it.

Yes I am Fufu (ex-FC Sporto, husband of Rita and neighbour of Tony Sutton).

Yes it did seem strange to me. Apparently in bigger games the noise of the crowd would make it very difficult to hear the dogs barking.

I wish I could remember his name.
