Blaming 'Possession Football' is a lazy and stupid excuse

We have the most static front 3 i've ever seen. Mirallas Lukaku Barkley, all of them, are just very static without the ball. I never see Lukaku just make a run behind the defence, or diagonally through them but to be honest there's probably no point because we'd never make that pass anyway!

id play for posession [all fit obv]

Howard

Coleman Besic Stones Baines
----McCarthy Barry------------
-Mirallas--Barkley----Pienaar----
--------Lukaku/eto?-----------

90% possesion stats nailed on

In the system we play, it's up to Lukaku to pick up the initial ball, make it stick, distribute, and then spin away behind the defence.

That's why he's to blame as much as anyone for our poor forward line, but ultimately it comes down to Martinez playing the system when Lukaku clearly doesn't have the talent to fulfil the role needed.

When players made through balls to lukaku last season he looked fantastic. This season the midfield get the ball, pass sideways then back to the defence

Your right about the system not suiting rom.
The way we play worked against arsenal last season but to keep flogging a dead horse is crackers.
Martinez has to wake up at some point and realise its not working.

It also helps playing the right players in there right positions and that would give rom more service

Correct and i would imagine a centre forward might like a winger or two.
Rom is going to be a great player only us could spend 28 million on him then not bother with him.

Indeed. Rom is undoubtedly a good finisher: he is at his best when he's facing goal with the ball at his feet, or coming onto balls.

However, we all know that he's still relatively limited in other areas as a 'creative' forward, including holding up the ball and distributing play.

Two things we're asking him to do (well not us, but Martinez), and then people question why we're not performing at our best.

I'm not saying he hasn't been to blame for some performances, sometimes he has just been poor, but equally we're not helping him either.

Obviously Martinez believes he needs to develop these skills which is fine, but maybe we could be slightly more flexible in how we serve him.

It's a balancing act: unfortunately we do not appear to be finding the balance just now. *dreams back to his first few games of last season*

Lulaku's playing better at the moment, but just watching the game on Sky at the moment, how i wish we'd gone for Boney instead. Like Lukaku he's a very good finisher, but he gives so much more than that. Lukaku may well develop into something special but I'm more interested in the present than a future that may never come.
