Been wondering recently if I want to just work on the cabbies, the pays not actually great is it however how much do you actually think you would earn whether it be weekly/yearly.

Right now, I'm on an apprenticeship untill late August on 2.64 an hour as an I.T Technician so even if I get a full time job as this, I would roughly be looking at around 18k a year?

I know that Black Cabs are expensive now aswell so what do you fellow blues reckon?

I've got no clue about taxi driving but with your current job, although you'd be on a similar wage when finished, would there be opportunities to progress in the future through promotions, other jobs etc.?

I remember when I was 17 on £3 as an apprentice bricklayer (that was only 7 years ago), it was back breaking work for so little money so I know how you feel.

By the by, once you qualify as an IT tech, get your offshore courses done. Lot of money to be mad day rating as not many IT techs actually go offshore.

My dad works for Delta on the private hires, he works 7 days a week, 10+ hours a day and brings home about £600 a week minus his car hire, settle for delta and fuel costs so about £450 - £500 a week, he's been a driver for 23 years and says the job's ****ed now because there's too many drivers.

How old are you btw? If your under 23/24 then you probably won't get insurance. I tried last year aged 20 and they wouldn't touch me with a bargepole!

Good point. My insurance went up by 300 quid last year even though nothing had changed, I was fuming. Insurance seems to be getting more expensive without having to worry about the added risk of being a taxi driver.

Sucks mate (n)
I think Jaguar Land Rover are taking on again this year, if you can get in there mate then your on a winner! Me mate sam pulls in a proper wedge in there, think it's £10.65 an hour with boss, overtime, night and weekend rates.

I feel your pain lid cause it's hard for us youngins finding our feet and won't be changing anytime soon, myself personally i'm saving to live and work in Australia!

Good luck mate!

I've just turned 25 so I'm hoping my insurance will come down slightly when it's up for renewal in April. I was paying £50 a month two years ago, now it's £120, almost as much as when I first started (a speeding ticket or two hasn't helped that mind).

Just make sure you don't get any points or have a bump! Nightmare.

My old next door neighbour was a black cab driver. He said, to make any money, he had to have his cab on the road 24/7. He did 7 12 hr day shifts, he then hired it to his mate for 7 12 hr night shifts. The taxi was only ever stood still outside ours for about 25 minutes a day at the most.

Still, he was a happy chap.

Get a profession behind you, it'll pay off in the long run
