I got swine flu and nearly died.

Have scarred lungs now, and get pneumonia regularly.

Hope it doesn't spread to humans tbh.

Im guessing there will be a few people more flying south this christmas then.

Remember when we all contracted and died from Bird flu last time? Ahh the memories. Just like when we died from Sars and those pesky Anthrax letters.

i knew a extended (kinda) family member who died from that, wasnt any complications and apparently got it whilst in hospital.

You could pick it up anywhere - virus' are easily caught if airborne - the hospital has to have air, and sick people need to breathe.

When I worked in Southport A&E, one of the medical juniors died of it. Horrible. I mean any flu has the chance of doing that, just usually not so pathogenic.

I had it and luckily I'm absolutely fine. Was like the megaflu for about 2 weeks though, and cough stayed with me for so long afterwards IIRC.

However, very much doubting that the pneumonia I had several months later isn't somewhat because of that...

Keep safe mate.

I've never smoked, but will probably end up with bronchiectasis as a result when older.

I had lobar pneumonia as a kid, with partial lung collapse, inappropriately treated for 8 months- I was given inhalers! So yeah, I'm in the fooked lung group too.

My daughter went to Manchester Childrens Hospital the other week for a 'Sniffle Test' at the research dept. cos of her allergy to eggs, a lot of injections can carry a risk as vaccines are often created attached to an egg albumen, so they are testing vaccines that are in a gelatine solution and a drop is inhaled up each nostril, once approved then it will be easy for all kids to get a flu 'not a jab' each year as it's a lot easy to give en masse than injections. She had it done last year and didn't get any colds all winter and as part of their testing she had it again the other week, she's 1 of about a dozen lab-rats that they are using.
Apparently they started to give it in Scotland last year but some parents of a Muslim kid were horrified to find that it was in Gelatine so all 'sniffles' were suspended, all religious groups have now deemed that it is ok to have as the amount of Gelatine is very small and it is for benefit not indulgence, and apparently the 'rules' are able to be adjusted in regard to children and their welfare.

They also contacted her to ask if she would take part in a Meningitis Study (1 of 6, 3 with allergy 3 without) but firstly I think she was a little bit nervous about the fact that it was Meningitis and secondly it was about 6 visits meaning 6 days off school.... which the LEA put down as 'unauthorised absences' which then affects her school reports via her attendance records. Cos it's in Manchester it does entail a full day off school as well and the school are quite adamant that it goes down as 'Unauthorised Absence' couple that with the 2 or 3 visits she has to have because of her allergy and all of a sudden it puts us as parents into the area where we can be fined for not sending her to school.
She opted not to do this study but 2 weeks later a girl she knew (this was 2 weeks ago and at a Uni in Liverpool) died of Viral Menigitis, awoke after a night out feeling awful then rang an Ambulance but had passed away when they got to her, so now with that impact she wishes she could do it without actually being punished by school.

I might get in touch with my MP the Shadow Health Secretary about it tbh because without people putting themselves forward for this kind of research we would never have vaccines, and for a 15 year old girl it involves quite a bit of bravery.
