Former Everton midfielder Diniyar Bilyaletdinov is being shut out of the Spartak Moscow squad because he is not good enough to earn a place, coach Valery Karpin said Sunday.
Bilyaletdinov was missing from Spartak’s 18-man squad for Sunday’s 3-1 home win over Terek Grozny, and Karpin has previously criticized him for putting on a lot of weight over the three-month winter break.
“He didn’t make the 18. We’ve got a lot of competition and everyone was warned about that at the training camps,” Karpin said.

Attacking midfield duties against Terek were handled largely by Dmitry Kombarov, Martin Jurado and Ari.
Bilyaletdinov, 28, joined Spartak in January last year and has sometimes struggled to hold down a first-team place in his year with the team, as well as battling injury.
Ireland winger Aiden McGeady was also missing from the squad that faced Terek, but Karpin said this was purely because he has yet to recover from a knee injury.
