It would seem from some threads lately that quite a few read books about some of the worlds nasties so lets have a thread

From Capone, Nitty, Giacana, Spillotro to Riina or even the Krays who do you believe was the leading gangster ever. You could go back in history to the Tudors who bled the country dry, you may even think businessmen or politicians qualify.

IMO the worst gangster ever was Toto Riina, boss of the Sicilian mafia, killed so many and had them killed for the slightest reason. He controlled drugs and prostitution throughout the world corrupted a string of officials and murdered those that would not cooperate. Even honest judges were not safe, one leading prosecutor was blown to bits by a bomb planted under the Messina/Palermo motorway and purportedly detonated by Riina from a high vantage point two miles away. When some of his associates went for trial in Palermo they had to build a built proof court to hold the trial.

Even in prison he was still controlling his entire empire and had everything he needed in prison, and I mean everything

Charlie Luciano

For a gangster he was nearly honest, he brought the families together in New York, introduced the commission and gave the Mafia a corporate identity. He was claimed to have been the boss of all bosses but it was a claim he denied. He was imprisoned in the States but was released early because he used his connections to help the allies invade Sicily in WW2

Only a little bloke but a nutter. Freddie Foreman took him out man to man, scared him badly in a knife encounter. He has just had an Asbo in a retirement home

Ha Ha ....Freddie Foreman battered him when they were both in their 60's or something ha ha ....

Been some ruthless people down through the years..... Meyer Lansky was more brain than Brawn but was the catalyst for what the Mafia became in America....Pablo Escobar is also a good shout.

Lansky was never a Mafiosa, he was Jewish of Russian origin. It was thought that he was the financial brains behind Luciano, they were childhood pals. No body could ever prove this either because he was too smart or it wasn't true. He lost a huge amount of money when Castro came to power in Cuba, Hyman Roth in the Godfather trilogy was modelled on him

My understanding of Lansky was that he . along with Lucciano and Siegel were the founders of Murders Inc. Hitmen for hire ha ha ..... the 3 of them formed a formidable group.

I could be wrong on this too.

In the Mafia itself.....New York were the supposed bosses on the Commision but Sam Giacana was reportedly one of the most powerful bosses ever in his time and he was Chicago....also Santo Trafficante had power as he was the man in Florida . It's an intriguing world to cram up on....fascinating.
