Best Job to get into now (IT Related)

Cheers for the advice barmcake.
I'll have a little look at Oracle and SQL. SQL is meant to be one of them things, its easy once you get the hang of it.
I'm absolutely awful at programming though. Thats basically why I didn't go to University. No way I would of done that.

No problem. I just do Oracle and DB2 but if you have any questions about SQL Server then I can ask a colleague who specialises in that area. I can't comment on how easy SQL Server is but like with most jobs, the basics are easy to pick up but when you factor in Enterprise Applications, high availability, disaster recovery etc then it starts to get relatively complicated. The site you work at hugely influences the type of skills you develop. If you're at a small site then you tend to get involved in lots of areas i.e. unix admin, storage, database etc. However, at a large site you probably won't touch those areas as they have large dedicated teams but you may get the opportunity to work on the latest technologies and do the fancy (expensive!) stuff.

One other consideration is the future of the job/skills you want to pursue. For example, in the Oracle database world I see potential threats to the DBA. The automation of software installation, configuration and administration. Oracle are pushing an out of the box server that is pre-installed and configured with an Oracle database. Also, there a lots of DBA's from India etc coming over who are very skilled which ultimately lowers salary rates. These trends influenced my decision to become an applications DBA and more specifically working with quite a niche product suite in Oracle Retail.

Anyway, best of luck trying to find something.

I wouldn't advise someone just entering IT to learn to become a DBA. It puts you in a pigeon hole. It's a very specific set of skills.

What would you do in my boots?
I'm aware you've read what I've got, finished college, I have 3years experience fixing equipment etc
and a little bit of data inputting.

I'm fully aware this is a Everton forum and the lot of you aren't interested in this however I want to know asap

I'm not suggesting that but like I said earlier, if you land at a large site you won't get the opportunity to cross into different areas because its all too big and controlled. We've got large teams supporting every area (approx 30 in the DBA team alone) and when you're running Enterprise class systems you need to be full time in one role or you just won't develop the experience/expertise required.
