Whos the best football analyst on TV? Not on about commentators, just the ex pros who sit in studios on sky, BT and BBC.

Apologies for missing anyone obvious.

Two votes allowed.

Discuss? Rant?

..only 6 ex-Reds yet they seem to hog it.

Lob in Stevie Me, and its close to 50%. Probs a few others that pop up from time to time. Hamman for example. And that full back they signed from Blackburn (I think), cant remember his name.

edit. Jason Macateer. (sic)

Osi Umenyiora and Jason Bell.
Damn, you meant footie not Murican football.

But, seriously listen to these two guys talk about the NFL and you realise just how crap our footie pundits really are.
Funny, speak clearly and coherently unlike the likes of Savage and Wright.

Even more seriously, look again at that list and it's chronic how many divvies there are amongst them.

I like Wrighty. He seems a decent sort and he likes a laugh. I don't see Steve "Man of many clubs" Claridge on there.

He's quite smart despite sounding like Only Fools and Horses.

Two things for me changed punditry for the better- Gary Neville and football podcasts. The level of analysis that used to be acceptable was simply atrocious. It was literally “say what you see”. Unfortunately for him Neville lost a lot of credibility with his time at Valencia, but nobody can deny he changed punditry with his work on MNF.

Andy Gray was ok for his time (sexism aside). Jermaine Jenas communicates well but he lost a lot of credibility for me during the FA Cup semi-finals last year with his incredibly biased assertions that Tottenham didn’t deserve to lose against Chelsea. Honestly if you haven’t seen it, it’s quite pathetic and he looks like a child. I also used to enjoy whenever Roy Keane slaughtered United excessively and made Southgate [Poor language removed] his pants whenever he disagreed with him.

The worst are the BT champions league pundits. Ferdinand, Lampard, Gerrard and to a lesser extent Scholes are awful. The goals show with James Richardson and the journalists totally shows them up. If they’re not talking about the English teams or the European superpowers then they literally have no idea what to say about the teams involved.

Ex Players in the main don't make good analyst's because quite simply they tend not to be particularly analytical. It's usually gut feeling guffaw and that.

Nerds who blog on whoscored.com etc are far better to read or listen to imho.

Pat Nevin is a good exception though as he is a bit of a nerd, on the flip side he is Moyes's mate.
