Best England performance you've ever seen

The Graun has done a 6 Best since '96, including the ultimately-meaningless 5-1 qualifier vs Germany.

What's the best England performance you've ever seen, from any year or class of game? For me personally it has to be within a major tournament and against a Big Nation, so the 4-1 vs Holland in Euro '96. I honestly thought your name was on the trophy that year. Poor Scotland, tho'...at 4-0 they were gonna make it past the first round for the first time in their history then up pops Kluivert with a consolation and the Scots go out the group on goal-difference. They haven't been at a major tournament since.

England tho' under El Tel were very tasty. Much better than the 'golden generation' of the 00's.

In Scotland we got to watch the 4_0 game not the England game
The highlights looked good tbh.
Away v Brazil comes to mind

Germany 5-1 Euro Qualifiers
Holland 4-1 Euros

For some reason this random friendly against Argentina has stuck in my mind, maybe not best performance but was a cracking match with a great atmosphere and a Hollywood ending.

A few stand out for England for me

Possibly the most frequently mentioned is the

Germany 1 England 5 in 2001

A night where everything England tried seem to come off. That big Munich scoreboard shining the scoreline and the shock of seeing Germany demoralised by English talent. It was a highpoint of Sven's reign and the team went onto reach the quarters in the World Cup and even led Brazil for a long time in that match.

Spain 2 England 3 last night

This was in many ways better than the Germany result as they just folded and Spain fought back and were desperate to turn it around, they looked devastated by the result. This game seemed and felt like far more than a nations league match.

Easily the best international involving England in recent times by such a long way, they played like one of our top premier league teams in a tough champions league away tie.

Ruthless and clinical in the first half with some excellent movement and determined to not let it go in the second.

Four at the back means more players in midfield and more support in attack, he's moving on and developing a core of young talent

This was a landmark performance for England. The kind of performance that vindicated Gareth Southgate’s bold approach, that showed tactically he can go toe-to-toe with the best coaches in world football and that England are doing all the right things in personnel and approach. And have the players.

England 4 Croatia 2 Euros finals 2004

Wayne Rooney came of age and reached heights he possibly never ever reached again on the international stage. This was an England team well capable of winning this tournament and on the night Croatia, themselves very useful, found England in blistering form.

Croatia took the lead and they fought to the end but this was an occasion when the overwhelming quality in England’s side was just too much for them. This was to be Scholes’ penultimate game for England and he pulled the strings in midfield. Rooney’s finishing was of the highest order and Lampard was emerging as an excellent international. It should have been the start of something but this team never recaptured that form again.

Croatia 1 England 4 World Cup qualifiers 2010

Walcott and Rooney ripping Croatia apart, they just had no answer

And then the 4-1 vs Holland mentioned in an above post from the Euros 96.

For me last night was as good as any

Having read a few posts on this and other Everton forums, there does seem to be a very strong anti-England brigade, who seem to share a begrudging, almost mean spirited attitude where England are concerned, giving only faint praise where absolutely unavoidable and, almost as if through clenched teeth, qualifying it with as many negatives as they can.

A sort of 'belittle any victories and make hay when they lose' attitude.

Even about last night..

I keep seeing it was a 'friendly' from the anti-England brigade. That may suit the whole 'big wow' narrative but it's just absolute bollocks isn't it?

Whether anybody respects the Nation's League or not, it's a competitive game and I have to say I've been enjoying the NL.

It was an outstanding result by England and it does, in my view, confirm that England belong at their ranking and maybe, just maybe they deserved to make the WC semi and it wasn't just some big fluke.

I don't share this negative mindset at all, as to me it's not at all generous and it's definitely not a particularly good look either.

Weirdly, Italy 0 0 England in a WC qualifier in Rome. Nearly won it at the death as well.

Cant remember the year, but it was the game that produced the iconic Terry Butcher photo with his bandaged and bloodied head.

Guess its cos they got a very difficult job done.

Do you mean two different games?

Butchers bandage was against Sweden in '89 and the Italy game was '97.

Both were important grouop matches where we needed a draw to qualify.

Was it? Blimey, could have sworn it was the Italy game. Would have cost me £1/2m on Millionaire that.

The Italy game was the 0 0 qualifier though wasnt it?

edit. What a divvie I am. As if Butcher could play in an England team with Ian Wright.

For newer posters, this is (yet) another example of why you should take zero interest in any football based post I ever make.

Yeah it was. Sweden was as well.

Another similarity was that ince got a head injury in the Italy game and had to get it bandaged. Less blood on his though.

Best live game has to be v Croatia in Euro 2004, esp with Rooney on fire. England played really well after bad start. Best TV game, probably the 5-1 in Munich.

I really don't think anybody can look past the Euro 96 Netherlands game, that team were on fire that day and destroyed a very good Dutch team. Still have nightmares about Gazza sliding in and missing the ball by an inch, in the semi, that is how far we were away from winning that tournament. In my opinion, we would have gone on to batter the Czech side.

All the racist knobheads put me off watching England....couldn't care less about them now. They will never win a world cup again...

Definitely agree on the racist element, just wish they would disappear. As to the certainty on never winning the World Cup, i don't think that's extremely likely but I don't completely discount the possibility either.

Many on here may even cheer if they lost the final, to some it just wouldn't suit their agenda at all.
