Which film wowed you the most on the cinema? Doesn't have to be the greatest film overall, but just the visuals.

Gravity is certainly hard to beat (rubbish plot though), but I think There Will Be Blood and Gladiator were equally as impressive for different reasons.

Total Recall. Not the greatest movie ever, and a bit dated and cheesy, but at the time it was fantastic at the cinema.
In fact, True Lies was another, Arnie made a few that were perfect for the big screen.

...I always prefer the film context to any visual effect gimmicks.
The question still stands though. Maybe the big screen and surround sound enhanced the emotions of a film, that would be lost on a home TV.

The Lives Of Others, for example, saw that on the cinema and the tension created was incredible.

Avatar was a good experience. Also going to see The Force Awakens at midnight, great atmosphere. There's definitely still a future for cinema, people will pay to see good films.

Comedy films can be great when the whole audience are enjoying it. The end of a epic film series is mostly always enjoyable. Lord of the Rings comes to mind.
