Best "Celtic" Everton side of all time

Next to the sale of Alan Ball in 1972 and the shock exit of Big Dunc at the turn of the century, Ken McNaught's sale to Villa was easily the most unexpected transfer I can recall.

It came right out the blue.

He had really established himself that season and we all thought he would have followed through and became the rock at the heart of our defence fir years.....a line of succession from Brian Labone through Roger Kenyon, playing alongside Mick Lyons.

Alas it wasn't to be.....and he went on to become a successful centre half at Villa, winning the European Cup.

Another one that got away :(

Nah, the Gary Speed debacle beats that. And Rooney being touted around by Alan Stubbs.

We've missed a trick with a goalkeeper to be fair.

An Everton Legend.

With the delightful middle name of Scougal.

Pushes the Binman all the way.

Scottish to the Bone too.

Drew Scougal Brand.

No way.

And Rooney leaving came as no shock.....it was being touted for weeks before it happened.

In fact, the press were trying to punt him the moment he became a sensation at Euro '04.

Ball, McNaught and Big Dunc were transfers which came right out the blue.....we just woke up one morning and they were gone :(

Speeds sale was a shock. And the way it was done was shocking.

Very true.

But there was a lead up to it.....hadn't he refused to play the week before Howard sold him?

For years the crowd sang an uncomplimentary song about him every time he returned.....the truth behind his transfer only became apparent after his untimely death IIRC.

A very sad and as you say, shocking, incident.
