My mums looking to get a new puppy. We've had Cavalier King Charles Spaniels for over 15 years, but they have so many health problems that my mum can't take the heartache of losing them so early.

Looking for a healthy, family friendly breed. Any ideas based on experience?

What are your favourite and least recommended and so on.

Golden Retrievers for me. Quiet, loyal & gentle. Very good with kids. Can be left in the house without howling the place down. Very easy to train.

My family have a Cairn Terrier. He's smart as [Poor language removed] (he's also a smart-ass [Poor language removed]), and knows how to manipulate his training to maximize his rewards. He's a solitary beast who likes to brood and stare intently into the distance like he's plotting something. His favorite activity is popcorning other dogs who are happily playing together. He's 20 lbs, but has teeth like a German Shepherd, and will remind you of that if he's feeling particularly bitter.

Would not recommend to anyone, but I love that dog.
