Haven't read every post in the thread, but part of me thinks he's more suited to the role McCarthy plays than Barry...which presents an obvious problem. Not saying he couldn't perform the "destroyer" role that Barry currently occupies, but he's too good going forward and more of a box to box type than simply providing cover for the fullbacks, and being the last midfielder to join the attack.
To that end, if Barkley ends up playing as more of a deep lying playmaker in the future, in more of a box to box role rather than the quasi #10 he's been playing, does that leave room on the pitch for both? I'm afraid we have too many players with similar skill sets. It's a good problem to have I guess but it's still a challenge to be solved.
Fast forward 3-4 years...where does the lad Tom Davies fit in? Ledson? Walsh? Dowell? I know that's a long way off, but we have a ton of midfielders coming through the youth ranks and several appear to be potentially good enough for the first team.
Would play Cleverley in the left wing role and rotate Deulofeu/Mirallas on the right. Its time to post, THE team :
Robles
Coleman - Jags - Stones - Baines
Barry/McCarthy
Besic - Barkley
Geri ------------------- Mirallas
Rom

Also would play Stones as RCB and Jags on the left but we've had that argument before![]()
But you wouldn't put Baines on the right and Coleman on the left....although perhaps you would lol@Brownie been telling me off for years, CBs are CBs, screw that left footed right footed bolloxs!
Big fan of The Clev on the left, he holds his shape and can pick a pass.
But you wouldn't put Baines on the right and Coleman on the left....although perhaps you would lol
.
Besic seems pretty right footed though and Barkley two footed (if anything he seems to prefer his left) so that was one thing I did agree on lolTo expand, you didnt question the CMs, surely Barkley should be on the right, to allow him to shoot better?
