Besic as Successor to Barry

So, after reading the whole thread, only given solution for Cleverley to be in first eleven is left midfield/wing position. He has a contract for five years and is an England international, but Mirallas signed a contract for three more years. Is it between them to fight for that position or Kone will occupy it until his footballing retirement? Having that Barkley will play as an attacking midfielder behind Lukaku, we have that next question is appearing: Can Everton have Besic, McCarthy, Cleverley and Mirallas in squad for a long period of time and who will be the first to leave? My guess is Mirallas.

Haven't read every post in the thread, but part of me thinks he's more suited to the role McCarthy plays than Barry...which presents an obvious problem. Not saying he couldn't perform the "destroyer" role that Barry currently occupies, but he's too good going forward and more of a box to box type than simply providing cover for the fullbacks, and being the last midfielder to join the attack.

To that end, if Barkley ends up playing as more of a deep lying playmaker in the future, in more of a box to box role rather than the quasi #10 he's been playing, does that leave room on the pitch for both? I'm afraid we have too many players with similar skill sets. It's a good problem to have I guess but it's still a challenge to be solved.

Fast forward 3-4 years...where does the lad Tom Davies fit in? Ledson? Walsh? Dowell? I know that's a long way off, but we have a ton of midfielders coming through the youth ranks and several appear to be potentially good enough for the first team.

Yes, some good questions raised - and they are nice problems to have.

However, I did lose you around the "quasi #10 role" bit.

Football used to be so much easier than this.

Would play Cleverley in the left wing role and rotate Deulofeu/Mirallas on the right.

Also would play Stones as RCB and Jags on the left but we've had that argument before :p

@Brownie been telling me off for years, CBs are CBs, screw that left footed right footed bolloxs!

Big fan of The Clev on the left, he holds his shape and can pick a pass.

But you wouldn't put Baines on the right and Coleman on the left....although perhaps you would lol

Aye it is mostly for shape reasons I'd do it, Mirallas cuts in a lot when he's on the left and Barkley's strength isn't really tackling so makes that side a bit vulnerable especially against someone with pace as relies on Barry/Jags getting across to help out Baines.

Cleverley wouldn't get forward as much so not as attacking but he does pick out some nice long passes and he's naturally inclined to cover his fullback a bit more. Would definitely do it for away games and the tougher home ones.

Its such a shame that Besic got injured at the start of the season and now hes back McCarthy is injured.

I'm really looking forward to seeing them start together.
