charting their 27 number 1s has left me feeling very sad. Amazing contribution to music.
I think their contribution to music should not be measured by their #1 hits though - Westlife had a string of #1s, what have they actually contributed to music? Bugger all.

Post Sgt Pepper, The Beatles produced some truly revolutionary music, which is amazing considering how young they were. A lot of credit should also go to the folks around them, mind. George Martin for example.

Amazing to think the same band who wrote 'She loves you yeah yeah yeah' went on to write 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun', 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', and 'I Am The Walrus'.

top band; did a few clunkers out of 180+ songs but not very many.
Got a bit self-indulgent on the White Album but I'll let them off.

Best Beatles song? Toughie, I'm going with a top 5:

Oh Darling
Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Sexy Sadie
Twist & Shout
Glass Onion

couldn't narrow it down to 20...and that would vary depending on mood.
Also

3 in your 5 from the self-indulgent album??

will force myself to narrow it down as a mental exercise

Yes, I meant that there are certain tracks on The White Album that are self-indulgent, as opposed to the whole album.

Ah I see. revolution number nine being a prime example. I can't remember who, I think George, who said...we were basically each others session men.

apropos nothing my copy of the white album cost 4pound 19 and 6

should've made it a single disc for me

degs is right though, I'd have no chance of narrowing it down to one favourite

rubber soul and revolver are the albums where I feel they really hit their stride though

Revolver set the bar that high that one or both of the Wilsons in the Beachboys had a nervous breakdown trying to match the creativity, they were still trying to match that when Sgt. Pepper came out and raised the bar again.

There's Elvis; The Beatles; ( for all sorts of reasons not all musical ) and everybody else. I would say that you can't judge The Beatles in relation to any other group/artist of their time, or any other.

They're in a class of their own.
