You are supposed to play it to find faults and bugs, then report them to the devs so they can fix it. It also proves to them whether the infrastructure they have in place is sufficient for an official release.

But yeah, it has kinda become the new demo since they started opening it up to everyone. It all used to be closed beta testing and they would pay the testers. But why pay someone when people will line up to do it for free!
