Barkley/Sterling in Under 21 Euros

I think its a bit retrograde for lads like Ross and Stirling - whove already played at a World Cup - and are regarded as the young creatives and the way forward for the full England squad, to then go back to Gareth Southgate and the U21s.

Its a good idea to have barkley and stones in there. However they should be omitted from other internationals to give them enough rest.

Then again, if theyre already in the national side why bother -- would germany who they mention drop a load of top national team players to the u21s if theyve already stepped up?

Southgate said on the radio this morning he didn't see the point for players established in the senior side, so it's really up to the players to get themselves in that position.

They can [Poor language removed], want them getting rest not playing

Koff england

He played last summer and he needs a full summers break.

He's already had a leg break playing for England.

The player doesn't have to play anyway.

Everton should not cooperate with this ridiculous suggestion.

Yes Ozil and others had already played for Germany's seniors before winning the U21 euros. Juan Mata and Sergio Busquets and others dropped down to U21 having already played for seniors.

Surely the point of the under 21s is to develop players for the senior team? Given that both players have experienced a World Cup, there doesn't seem much to gain for them in turning out for the under 21s. Are the FA trying to win the competition in the hope it makes them look good?

If those seniors were to drop down though, that would be a strong squad theoretically capable of going far in the tournament. Surely it's good for those players to have experience going far in a tournament as well as failing with the seniors?

....if you take this to club level, it would mean that these lads drop down and play with juniors. They learn a lot more from a playing and professional perspective mixing with seniors than they do with their own age group.

To be honest if this is the thinking then perhaps players like Ledson and Kenny should then STEP UP to the u21s as rheyve already experienced winning a youth tournament?

Seems like a good idea for stones and barkley as well but only if they have sufficient time off to recover etc.

Would they rather win senior caps or go to an u21 tournament I wonder.....?

Yes, there is that. You would hope that the actual behind the scenes setup is very similar between the two squads.

yep, this was my thinking.

terrible idea imo - never really watched u21 tournmaments but i doubt it gives players that "big tournament" experience which would be the only benefit for them you'd think.

holds back future youngsters coming through and gaining the valuable experience themselves. like you said, these two have already been to a senior WC in south america - this won't help them at all.
