It's quite telling that in the European golden boot charts Ronaldo and Messi are a good 10 goals clear of the next contender, and if you go for those in a major league it's nearer to 15 goals clear. It's easy to assume sometimes that this must just be an easier, more attack focused era, but those two are a cut above.

Many love to compare/rank this/that from different eras, I never quite felt that need tbh

I think besides athletes being largely better conditioned & trained, defenses are far more intricately organized since the offside rule change...If anything, there's a sound argument to be made that it's even harder to score now which makes the numbers even more astonishing

Of course, when you watch videos of Messi at 5 years of age, you pretty much see the same player you see today
