Barca transfer ban

The irony of course is that several of these players, including Deulofeu, turned down big Premiership money to stay at La Masia...and somehow Barcelona is singled out as exploiting minors...It's preposterous

Even if you conclude that these kids are not 'exploited' because they are happy to be at Barcelona, if rules were broken as to how they were signed and what they were offered then they have to come down hard on them.

Let's say (and I don't know what they did) for example that Barcelona were giving the parents of these kids some sort of financial reward or property in Spain etc. then it would create a precedent at back-water leagues throughout football.

I repeat, I've no idea what they have done but if they've broken rules which were enacted to avoid exploitation, then it doesn't matter how well these kids are looked after. They've got to enforce the principle.

The incentive isn't the issue as far as I can tell. There are three rules FIFA use to apply leniency in such a situation

  1. the player's parents have moved country for their own, non-related reasons
  2. the move takes place within the European Union if a player is aged between 16 and 18
  3. the player's home is less than 50 kilometres from the national border being crossed

Obviously when you have a kid from Korea over there they've broken one of those rules...

It's not just about being happy, it's also about the welfare of the kids and that is not at issue in this case

If this were the case, absolutely...but that's not what they are being punished for

Truth is, the details of how they have broken rules have not been released and even Barcelona's official response doesn't even allude to anything specific...The speculation is that it has to do with how things were filed but even that seems dubious considering how long and successful they've been at bringing kids through the academy from around the globe...I go back to an earlier post, it has a different feel to it but we'll see

I don't think that's in doubt, but I'd be very surprised if they're the only club to have done so. You could easily imagine every major European club to have done this.

Manchester United have been doing it for years,

They fetched Johnny Evans's family over from Belfast, bought them a house and gave his arl fella a job on the ground staff.

And more recently it was in the papers about an Aussie kid they brought over under similar circumstances.
