It's that time of year again. The shortlist hasn't come out yet; should be next week sometime. A shortlist of 23. Will Suarez be in the final 3 after his latest bite ? who knows. I think the final 3 will be Messi, Ronaldo and Suarez, with Ronaldo winning it.

Who else deserves to be on the shortlist though. A bunch of the Germany/Munich players no doubt. Will we see a surprise and deserved name on there.

Ronaldo is a shoe in I'd have thought. The German players at Bayern and the national team are outstanding team players rather than really stand-out individuals.

Given that I think a Bayern/German player should get it then I think Lahm deserves it (given that he captains both).

The world cup and CL final being my reasons why Ronaldo shouldn't get it, and the fact that his name is there purely because he is Messi is why he shouldn't even be in the top 3 (but absolutely will be).

Equally I would like to see someone like Costa/Courtois get it for the amazing feat that was them winning La Liga.

Do you honestly think Lahm was THE best player in the world in 2014?

As good a player he is, he wasnt was he. Ronaldo and Messi have been there for years because they are consistently superb and are the difference between a good team and a great one. If either of these two missed a handful of games on the bounce, their teams arent quite the same. We can all agree that Suarez was the main reason for them lot going close last year; he was the difference.

Is Lahm the difference for Munich or Germany ? Not quite I imagine. This is an individual accolade that showcases the worlds best player of that particular year; not because he captained two successful teams.
