Leighton Baines and Alan Stubbs could have been drafted into the Blues' squad for the final game of 2007.
The duo have been sidelined for much of December but have now returned to full training ahead of schedule, with Baines fit again after a hamstring injury and Stubbs recovered from a torn calf muscle.
Neither figured against Arsenal on Saturday, with the manager happy to stick with the defensive options that have served him well over the festive period.
But the return of the duo ahead of the New Year's Day trip to Middlesbrough has been welcomed.
He said: “Leighton and Stubbsy are training again and, if they were required, they could have probably played against Arsenal.
“It’s good to have them back. We are getting people back to fitness and the only one who is likely to be out for any length of time is Leon Osman (broken toe), who is going to be out for between four to six weeks.”
