Black is the new black
for London’s goalkeepers this season
London Fashion Week 2016 is in full swing, and with that upon us we thought it is only right to reveal that black is the ‘in’ colour for Premier League goalkeepers in teams from the capital city this season.
The flattering dark tops, such as the stylish number modelled by Petr Cech for Arsenal’s home games, have conceded just 0.77 goals on average per league game this season. Putting to bed the myth of fluorescent goalkeeper jerseys affecting opposing forwards.
Goalkeepers from London clubs have conceded less than a goal a game on average when wearing black/grey
In fact, bright orange jerseys look set to fall out of fashion completely this year. West Ham shot-stopper Adrian looked far from trendy when spotted in a garish tangerine outfit during a 4-1 battering by North London rivals Tottenham in November.
We analysed all Premier League matches played so far by London’s capital teams; Arsenal, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Tottenham, Watford and West Ham in the 2015/16 season. The research concludes that orange is officially the most costly colour for keepers to wear, with 1.33 goals conceded per game.
Floundering champions Chelsea have been more bargain bin than designer label this year. That could be because their keeper, Thibaut Courtois, has been dressed in black for only one match - and that was a clean sheet. Their regular cyan shirts have been something of a wardrobe malfunction during an unfashionable season in West London, as Blues’ goalies have let in an average of 1.50 goals per game when donning the colour.
Yellow, worn by Tottenham’s number one Hugo Lloris, boasts an average figure of exactly 1.00 goal per game. Green (1.07), cyan (1.08) and purple (1.08) jerseys are marginally above the average of 1.06.
