Avatars and their effects on others

Exactly how much do avatars play their part on forums, and peoples perception of us?

Over time, we tend to picture and remember people as their avatars, so if you have an avatar that is particularly aggressive, are people aggressive towards you?

If you have one that is a smiley face for example, do people tend to treat you less defensively?

Personally, I think it's possible that this is true.
