Austrian hooligans

One of my happiest memories from the ECWC final in 1985 was the friendship between the two sets of fans. Comes from being on a neutral venue possibly.

The dutch police were easygoing - handing out sheets of advice about where to drink etc "welcome football friends..."

I still have somewhere the photo of two groups of fans - half in blue and half in green - arms round each other, flags held up proudly. Special moment for me really.

So Austrian fans are OK by me.

Heysel followed a fortnight later.

*prays that another thread doesn't start entitled "How we were diddled out our righful European heritage.."

They didn't resist much when the Nazis went looking for lebenstraum, bit of a wet drab really.

The Nazis had everyone fighting for them, even Russians.

They didn't resist because they bought into this whole unifying the german-speaking people [Poor language removed], hence the Anschluss. Only Christopher Plummer stood up to the Nazis!

You're right about the wide range of nationalities fighting with/for the germans, although in the case of the russians it was mainly those who were opposed to the communist regime.

And some of those captured too mate.

I'm reading this at the moment, it's well worth a read. I can post it to you when Im back next if you want:

The Storm of War by Andrew Roberts: Book Review | Books | The Observer

That picture is superb by the way.

The Storm of War: A New History of the Second World War: Amazon.co.uk: Andrew Roberts: Books

It's one of the best books I've read on it.

I'm at the part detailing the Final Solution now and it's absolutely galling the methods and sheer numbers involved.

Yes, switching sides was better than being a pow for some captured soldiers - it probably dramatically increased their chances of survival.

Thanks for the offer, it sounds like just the type of book I like to read.

Ta, Chico. It's such a vast subject, & I'm certainly no expert, but I've always been fascinated by the 2 world wars - I think it's the sheer magnitude of the 2 conflicts & the scale of waste of human life that fascinates me.
