Q1: After a pretty poor start to the season, do you think van Gaal is the right man for Manchester United?

No I don't. United are a massive club and their manager's defining characteristic should be that they are the Manchester United manager. That's not true of Van Gaal, who already had a storied history in the game when he arrived. That's not to say that he'll be a disaster, or that you won't benefit from his pedigree and consequent pulling power (I don't think Di Maria or Falcao would have signed for Moyes), but the 'right man' for Man Utd will be a relatively young manager capable of building a legacy over a decade or more. That's not Van Gaal, who I'd be surprised to see stay beyond three years.

Q2: A common phrase "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" seems like it should be applicable between United and Everton fans, however from the fans I have come across and so on this doesn't really seem the case, so how do you guys see the relationship between United and Everton?

Personally Everton is one of the clubs I respect the most in the league and you play some very attractive football post Moyes. (question provided by a member)

We played some nice football under Moyes as well. Particularly in his last year but intermittently before that too. I'm indifferent to United. You're not as bad for the game as City or Chelsea and you're not as odious as Liverpool, but that is faint praise indeed. I don't 'like' any football teams other than Everton.

Q3: The past fifteen months for both clubs have certainly been interesting. It's now Martinez's second season at the club. How would you compare how you're playing currently to how you were playing this time last season? Anything to be concerned/pleased about?

I was very pleased to see Martinez ace his first test in Europe. 4-1 against Wolfsburg is a great result and bodes well for our Europa campaign.

I'm naturally a bit concerned by the number of goals being conceded and the fact that our shithouse mentality at Anfield has persisted from Moyes' day. I think we'll finish slightly lower than we did last year with comfortably fewer points. That's okay though; we have some really promising youngsters and a front two of Barkley and Lukaku should be unplayable in about two years' time. With some smart management we can be a proper force when that happens.

Q4: Verdict on how both clubs have done in the transfer market?

United's summer has left you looking like a Championship Manager 2 scenario. You have four or five attacking players who would walk into 99% of sides in the world, but will struggle to put out an adequate back 4 every week for the forseeable future. Very difficult to appraise that.

I think Martinez did great in the summer. Lukaku isn't firing yet but he's a long term investment, and it was refreshing to see Everton just spend the money needed to get their top target. Retaining Barry was very important after last season. I'm very encouraged from what I've seen of Besic and Eto'o so far. Not seen enough of Atsu to judge him yet.

Q5: Where do you think both Manchester United and Everton will finish in the league this season?

Man U 5th, Everton 7th.

Q6: Are you concerned that you have an away game in Russia on Thursday and then play us on Sunday? (question provided by a member)

Christ yeah. The early kick off is an absolute piss take.

Q7: Thoughts on the Europa League, in with a chance, or detracting from progression in the league what with your relatively small squad? (question provided by a member)

I like the Europa League and am delighted that we're in it. I don't think we've much of a chance of winning it, and it will inevitably effect our finish in the league, but I've made peace with it.

Q8: Thoughts on Rooney 10 years on. Is he the player you thought he would become when he was still a youngster there? Has he exceeded expectations, or perhaps not quite hit the heights you thought he would? Would you have him back if he were to leave United in his twilight years? (question provided by a member)

When he came off the bench to score a Champions League hat-trick against Fenerbache (was it?) on his United debut I felt sick to my stomach. I thought we'd just sold the new Pelé. Ten years on he hasn't quite hit those heights but there's no shame in that. He's the best English player certainly since Scholes, arguably since Shearer and possibly since Gascoigne.

He seems like a proper little nobhead though. I would have him back in his twilight years but I doubt I'd feel a particular affection towards him. Seeing him play for United has always felt like living in a parallel universe where the Allies lost the war. It was horrible to see him taken from us so early and it was hard to think about football with any romance for a long time afterwards, especially as he seemed to drive the transfer himself in the end. What might have been.

Q9: What would be your starting 11 if you had to pick an Everton team from 2000-2014? (question provided by a member)

Martyn
Coleman Jagielka Lescott Baines
Dacourt Fellaini
Arteta Barkley Rooney
Lukaku

Q10: Which XI would you like to see your club field against us?

It's a bit difficult with our injuries. I think I'd throw Atsu in for his pace in the absence of Mirallas, he could be our Jamie Vardy. I don't rate Stones as high as most, so if they're both fit I'd still go with Jagielka and Distin against Di Maria and co.

Howard
Coleman Jagielka Distin Baines
McCarthy Besic Barry
Atsu Lukaku Naismith

Q11: Finally, your predictions for the match?

3-1 to United. I think the game will go quite as the derby did but you'll have the strikers to punish us. We never fail to score these days and your defence is suspect, so I can see Naismith or maybe Eto'o off the bench getting a consolation.

Not enough evidence either way at this point. I would question the fact that he didn't seem to want to prioritize sorting your defence out in the transfer window. I also think flogging Welbeck was a big mistake, loved the club and he calmly played while shunted out on the wing for you and was always capable of doing a job. That whole experiment with 3-5-2 was a disaster in the waiting, I'm sure many of you were happy to see you go back to a back four, your defenders definitely were.

Being a club from Manchester will earn you few friends from us, and that distinction is only where the dislike begins. For me personally, I actively hope your team does poorly. These last 16 months or so have been a joyous holiday from the times of Fergie where you would assume in August that you lot would walk to the title handing us a few batterings along the way. If we didn't hate you in the 90's, we definitely did when it turned out that you were the ones Rooney was abandoning us for... I might've even preferred he'd gone to Newcastle with their whopper fans. Your songs about scousers are disgusting and boil my blue blood until I'm frothing at the mouth in these games for us to just whack your overpaid nancies everywhere.

Q3: The past fifteen months for both clubs have certainly been interesting. It's now Martinez's second season at the club. How would you compare how you're playing currently to how you were playing this time last season? Anything to be concerned/pleased about?
Our defence is a year older, and a year gone on without Moyes superb defensive detailing. You've seen how Ferdinand went on about the constant defensive drills in training, well that's what helped us be consistently the 3rd-4th best defense in the league over the last few years. Martinez doesn't place the same emphasis on those skills and I think that not going over enough defensive work in preseason has led to this inability to keep a clean sheet. The results and performances have been so-so, attacking-wise we have looked up to it but so many silly individual defensive mistakes keep costing us.

Q4: Verdict on how both clubs have done in the transfer market?
Man Utd: Didn't buy enough quality defenders to replace some of the dross you have back there.

Everton: Arguably overspent on Lukaku, but filled out the squad with some competition. Could have also done with a quality CB.

Q5: Where do you think both Manchester United and Everton will finish in the league this season?
Everton: Fifth or Sixth
Man Utd: Fifth or Sixth depending on how quick you sort out your tactics.

Q6:
Are you concerned that you have an away game in Russia on Thursday and then play us on Sunday? (question provided by a member)
Yes, but not as much as I would have been last year. We have a deeper squad than last year. Old Man U legend Darron Gibson is back fit and playing this season (For how long though?), Besic is coming along ok, Atsu and Eto'o need some game time to assert themselves on the squad a bit more.

Q7: Thoughts on the Europa League, in with a chance, or detracting from progression in the league what with your relatively small squad? (question provided by a member)
As good a chance of any of the teams in there until the Champions League rejects enter the competition. Thankfully, the injuries to our squad haven't been as long-term as last year where we lost Gibson, Oviedo, and Kone for the entire season. Martinez appears to be taking it seriously, started the same team he did vs WBA against Wolfsberg in our first match, I think his goal is to nail down qualification to the next round and then use it to rotate the squad in the remaining games if we are lucky.

Has he exceeded expectations, or perhaps not quite hit the heights you thought he would? Would you have him back if he were to leave United in his twilight years? (question provided by a member)
Not at all, for better or worse he is a lot different than what I thought he could be. I thought he could be like Messi, head down just running at will through defenders for fun with an excellent eye for goal. The pace and hunger he had at that age to just have a go was amazing, he had no fear. After signing for Man U Fergie turned him into a better footballer for the sake of his team but not to improve his ability. If Rooney had joined when Ronaldo did and applied a similar attitude towards his career as Ronaldo you would see a much more different player, and a more effective one too. He's won everything with you lot, but it has hurt his performances for England. Fergie built him into what he wanted him to be, not what was going to help England win trophies (It would've taken more than Rooney anyways). The only way I'd have him back is if he took every ounce of coin he got from you lot and bought us from Kenwright, then he could play himself.

Q11: Finally, your predictions for the match?
3-2 Oviedo last minute winner for the blues!

1. Van Gaal needs time but won't stay anywhere near as long as SAF.

2. The respect is mutual but we definitely see ourselves as your equals on the pitch.

3. We're down from last year and the defense and injuries are a concern.

4. We both did really well but could've used a class central defender.

5. Y'all in CL and us in EL again. Probably 4th and 6th all things going well.

6. Yes, there does seem to be some continental effect but if we have McCarthy and Coleman on the weekend I wouldn't worry as much.

7. I'm glad we're in it and believe we have a shot at winning it if we survive the group stage. We have to be in Europe every year from here on out. It'll force us to build a proper 23-man squad.

8. He developed as I expected and feel he suffered from the burden of being "the guy" at times. Wouldn't have him back tbh. Barkley is the future.

9. All being at their prime: Howard baines stones jags Coleman McCarthy arteta pienaar Barkley mirallas lukaku

10. Howard baines stones jags coleman Barry mccarthy basic Naismith McGeady atsu lukaku

11. 2-2
It's against the rules to field 12 men

Hi, I'm an admin on RedCafe and last season I asked some questions here with a great response. Here's some more ahead of the game at the weekend. If you could answer them it'd be appreciated, ta and good luck this season.

Q1: After a pretty poor start to the season, do you think van Gaal is the right man for Manchester United?

He's a top manager who clearly has a good tactical mind, but the way the media got so carried away over him was ridiculous. People were making out like he was God's gift to football management because of a goalkeeper substitution. I personally think you'll win a trophy under him but you're at least 5 years away from the league again in my opinion and I doubt he'll stay in the game that long.

Q2: A common phrase "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" seems like it should be applicable between United and Everton fans, however from the fans I have come across and so on this doesn't really seem the case, so how do you guys see the relationship between United and Everton?

Meh, it is what it is. I have a few United supporting mates and they're sound. I have nothing against United as a club, I just view you as a rival, that's all. Last season was a bit different because Moyes was your manager and many of us are still very sore about him, we delighted in beating you to rub his nose in it. Now he's gone, it's back to normal.
Personally Everton is one of the clubs I respect the most in the league and you play some very attractive football post Moyes. (question provided by a member)

Q3:
The past fifteen months for both clubs have certainly been interesting. It's now Martinez's second season at the club. How would you compare how you're playing currently to how you were playing this time last season? Anything to be concerned/pleased about?

Still playing the same way, just been making loads of stupid individual mistakes that have cost us games. Defence needs to sort itself pronto because it hasn't become rubbish over night, they've just started the season in pure dope mode.

Q4: Verdict on how both clubs have done in the transfer market?

We did what we wanted, we got Lukaku and Barry and signed a few players to beef up the numbers. Can't complain really, though I do wonder where the rest of our transfer money went.

You lot have been weird in your transfer dealing. Absolute world class attacking but no one for your woeful defence. You've but loads of boss chefs but no ingredients to cook the food with. I do like the look of that Daley Blind though.

Q5: Where do you think both Manchester United and Everton will finish in the league this season?

United 6th. Everton 5th.

Q6:
Are you concerned that you have an away game in Russia on Thursday and then play us on Sunday? (question provided by a member)

Yes, we need to make sure our players are fresh enough for Thursday. I want to win in Russia but we really need to start racking up some wins in the league and getting points on the board.

Q7: Thoughts on the Europa League, in with a chance, or detracting from progression in the league what with your relatively small squad? (question provided by a member)

We definitely have a chance if we avoid injuries and take it seriously. Clubs like Tottenham and Inter Milan could win it as well but they don't because they view it as a chore and not something to enjoy. If we go for it and get that bit of luck, why can't we win it? We have the quality.

Q8: Thoughts on Rooney 10 years on. Is he the player you thought he would become when he was still a youngster there? Has he exceeded expectations, or perhaps not quite hit the heights you thought he would? Would you have him back if he were to leave United in his twilight years? (question provided by a member)

Not angry at him anymore, realise he did what any sane person would have done in his position at that time. I just don't like as a bloke because he's a mercenary. He doesn't look like he's even in love with football anymore, he's looks like a bloke who's only interested in getting his wage, hence why he kicks off about wanting to leave every now and then. I've not interest in seeing him coming back here to end his career because it would be pointless.

Q9: What would be your starting 11 if you had to pick an Everton team from 2000-2014? (question provided by a member)

Martyn

Coleman, Jagielka, Lescott, Baines

Mirallas, Arteta, McCarthy, Pienaar

Cahill

Lukaku

Q10: Which XI would you like to see your club field against us?

The best available.

Q11: Finally, your predictions for the match?

Another 1-0 to us.

I'd like us to pull down United's shorts, open them up and furiously bum these to the ground. Can't be bothered answering the questions though.

Congrats again on winning that 'best forum' award in May.

Pre/post Moyes that was the case, since then though you've been more of a rival. Not much of one mind.
