Thanks for that @jaycee

I remember it well.

The back ground to the long contracts being offered was when Coventry signed a defender from City, Gary Collier, for £350k (Yeah, dates it!), and the board and Manager thought it best to to tie the players to long contracts.

Unfortunately, the club soon resided in their natural habitat, and just couldnt pay the wages.

Didnt know Trevor Tainton went bust, but I do know that Geoff Merrick is still very, very bitter at what happened.

When they inevitably ended up propping up the old Div 4 with Terry Cooper as manager, he had no choice but to lob any youth players into the team. Pal of mine, at 16, played a few games even.

Ah well.

I remember the long contracts which at that time was unheard of,especially considering there was a few players coming up to the 30s and this was when not many players lasted much past that, the only player I really remember from that time was Gerry Gow,cant say any of the squad stood out

There wernt many good players, but a decent team really.

I think Gow had been sold to Man City by then, Tom Ritchie had certainly gone to Sunderland.

Basically, the team got into Div 1 with a mix of loads of local lads, and a sprinkle of Leeds and Scottish misfits. They just stayed up, then bought Peter Cormack, Norman Hunter, and Big Joe in, which improved them, obvs.

But the relegation killed them stone dead.

I was born in Bristol and my dad used to take me to their games every now and then when I was a kid. The only thing I can remember was a fight between the wolves mascot and one of the three little pigs (can't remember if they were the Bristol City mascots??).

But yeah, good luck to them...

Back in my youth on the Isle of Man I used to knock about and play in the same team as a lad from Bristol, who along with his dad, were the only Bristol City supporters I have ever known and really sound blokes.
Didn't stop me taking the mick something rotten when they got relegated though.
Christ I'm rambling again!

Fair play to them, how many players would do that nowadays? Seem to recall a lot of Portsmouth players staying on big wedge despite the club being on it's knees.

I've been to more Bristol City games than Everton games....

A cousin down there likes his excuse to get out of the house for a weekend of boozing, easy for me to fly over!
