It's been confirmed today that AS Cannes lost their liquidation appeal and will cease to exist;

They are responsible for bringing through some of France's greatest ever players, but AS Cannes are on the verge of going out of business after being banned from national football in France.

Cannes, the club that produced World Cup winners Zinedine Zidane and Patrick Vieira as well as Manchester City full-back Gael Clichy, have just a few days to pay off their debts and stay alive.

The club currently play in the fourth tier of French football but have racked up debts of €2.2million (£1.75m). An anonymous donor has already offered to pay half of that, but the club are still €1million short.

Good lord, shame this is.

Those debts mentioned there are pocket change compared to some other figures floating around with other european teams. George Weah used to play for them too.

4th tier ??? Christ, what rock have i been under. I remember this team in the top league not so long ago. Are they banned from French football due to finances ?

Its ironic. Cannes is one of the richest areas of France. Côte d'Azur

But they are close to Monaco and Nice.

Its abit like Tranmere compared with Liverpool and Everton really. Or probably Chester is a good parallel. Who got liquidated.

Feel sorry for their supporters. Can remember all to well when my local team lost their licence and were on the verge of liquidation. Luckily we won the appeal to get our licence back and also managed to fend of liquidation..

They are from a rich area but their footballing history has never been the richest or generally of the highest quality! They certainly brought on many fantastic players, such as Zidane and Vieira, but once any player who had any talent had made an impression there, they were snatched away and the club spent most of its time in the second tier of French football, despite some fleeting appearances in Ligue 1.

Vicenza from Italy, whom Robert Baggio started his career with, are on the cusp of going the same way. They certainly have a more illustrious history than AS Cannes, spending nearly 20 years in Serie A con-currently upto the mid-70's. They gave us Paolo Rossi, 60 goals in 94 games is some return! They have fallen from Serie B into the Lega Pro Prima Divisione and are barely stuggling to stay afloat financially.

Imagine the fortunes that various film stars have made on the back of Cannes the place, raving review there & career set.
Local Footy team goes out of business over an amount that would probably be chucked at a premier & party.
