Everton have confirmed that Mikel Arteta has suffered a grade two hamstring tear.

It is not yet known how long the Spanish midfielder will be out for.

Arteta pulled up after just seven minutes of Wednesday evening's Premier League clash with Birmingham City.

The 28-year-old was immediately substituted and was pictured with a crutch during the second half of the 1-1 draw with the Midlands outfit.

A scans on Thursday confirmed the injury to his right hamstring.

Everton's next game is against Fulham on 19 March.

Found this, someone else may be able to expand on it...

Grade 1: What does it feel like?

* May have tightness in the posterior thigh.
* Probably able to walk normally however will be aware of some discomfort
* Minimal swelling.
* Lying on front and trying to bend the knee against resistance probably won't produce much pain.

Grade 2: What does it feel like?

* Gait will be affected-limp may be present .
* May be associated with occasional sudden twinges of pain during activity.
* May notice swelling.
* Pressure increases pain.
* Flexing the knee against resistance causes pain.
* Might be unable to fully straighten the knee.

Grade 3: What does it feel like?

* Walking severely affected- may need walking aids such as crutches
* Severe pain- particularly during activity such as knee flexion.
* Noticeable swelling visible immediately.

4 weeks my guess.

Grade 1 is a millimeter tear. Upto 14 days

Grade 2 is several millimeters. Depending on severity 3-6 weeks

Grade 3 is a rupture, can be 6 weeks upto 6 months depending on severity.

And for those questioning methods. the probability of tears decrease with stretching and warming up and post exercise stretching and massage.

BUT THAT DOES NOT PRECLUDE THIS HAPPENING AT ALL.

Otherwise the likes of Usain Bolt wouldn't have struggled with them all last year (and his event doesn't involve turning or jumping!)

Its totally unrealistic to think that you'll ever stop these happening.

That looked a bad pull, think that’s his season over.

I did athletics for 20 years, 100m and long jump, and had several bad tears. Always took aleast 8 weeks to get back to competition fitness again

Used to warm up and warm down, but ignoring tight hamstrings was usually the cause.

My coach eventually had me doing 1 dedicated training session a week based purely on stretching exercises, good for recovery & mobility and often weeded out the twinges.

Didn’t stop all my injuries but they reduced drastically.

Did anyone notice the routine the Birmingham subs went through at half time as opposed to our lads just kicking the ball to each other?

Whats that got to do with anything?

Just Kicking a ball?

THATS FOOTBALL. And if you watched closely they don't just kick the ball. They stretch out as well. Hamstrings, Quads and Calfs.

Gah, it's not good at all that.

I remember when I used to tear my hamstring with karate and swimming, was out of competitions for weeks at a time. I hope he's back to his best ASAP! :(

Just kicking the ball? ****, that's lucky, I'm glad they weren't throwing it to eachother!

Dickov would have had them jumping over flaming oil drums chased by a gun wielding teleban soldier!

This is nothing. Phil Neville is a grade 4 wizard with level 3 fire spells, +2 to armour and the staff of antioch.
