Our daughter's school district has been fully online since last March. It has been a year since she has attended school in person and I believe this lack of social interaction and isolation is having bad effects on her mental health, even if she doesn't realize it. Last week our family had to complete a survey for my daughter’s school stating whether we wanted her come back to in person learning (with COVID protocols and only half of the class going every other week) or stay fully online until June. After a whole year of at home learning and all the challenges that have arose, we made the decision to send her back to school in two weeks. It wasn't an easy decision but I'm feeling more comfortable since the majority of our family has been vaccinated. My daughter however is not very happy about it but after a year of at home learning I'm myself feeling joyous and grateful for this change.

Does anyone else still have kids doing school from home? How are you feeling about it?

My eldest is 6. We did a mixture of some days in/at home from the start of the year. I'm a teacher so when I went in to school, so did she.

She needed a lot of support to do the work. Some days were nice but others were a real battle. On top of that I had to try and do my job as well... Ended up getting quite frustrated with her at times which I feel a bit bad about.

Online learning is no substitute for being in the classroom. They learn half as much from their peers as they do from teachers. Plus being amidst other kids pushes them on.

We had worries about her lack of socialising with kids get own age as at 6 they're just getting to grips with friendships etc.

Since she's been back full time she's bounced out every day on cloud nine.

My daughter has never very fond of school work but she was still an excellent student prior to Covid. Like you say, kids push one another to do better, plus the in person support by her teachers was enough aid
for my daughter to understand the material and complete her assignments without issue. Now days however she doesn't have as much motivation and we been having a lot of battles in recent months because she dislike me telling her to do her assignments. She also gets easily distracted at home and wants to chat with her friends more than do school work. What I dislike the most about the whole situation is that since we have been isolated for so long and haven't seeing people in person for months, she now loves to be in her room all the time and doesn't want to get out of the house. So I'm happy to know that in two weeks she will be out of her room for hours and will finally be interacting with kids in person, as childhood should be. I'm also hoping that like your daughter she will bounce back and she will be enthusiastic about being back at school in person.

weve only got one left who is in her final year of high school here in Virginia. They had kids going in 2 days a week and now they've upped it to 4. However they are still maintaining the option to be fully virtual if you desire. Seems smart to me.
That said she's missed out on all that High School drama in her final year - good/bad, I don't know.
Of course next year she should be off to college but she is enrolling in the local online community college for at least half the year and playing it by ear. Maybe she will have decided on a career path by then... Saves us a few bob too!!

Closed since March eh? Difficult situation but absolutely necessary from a disease control point of view - speaking as a scientist and a retired teacher.

Over here we have a sociopathic government in charge who refused to close the schools, which they regard as a child minding service so the worker drones can go out to work for the corporations and keep the money coming in.

They opened schools up as soon as they could citing children not being badly affected and pretending that no adults at all worked in schools. Predictably we had a 2nd wave. Eventually they HAD to shut them again and just last Monday reopened them again even though we are a long way away from any other free movement (unless a till is incolved).

Our government are turds.

our kids’ district was online last spring but resumed in the fall with a hybrid approach. All of the older kids were in class two days and at home two days and all students were virtual on Fridays. Elementary kids attend full time. Around November the older kids went to four days in person with Friday remaining virtual. Any parents who wanted their child to remain virtual could choose that and some kids have not been in class all year. I think it’s been very successful and the evidence appears to support this—transmission among children is very low.
