Are we at our best as a counter-attacking side?

Rom, Ross, Kev, Gerry, Seamus, even Kone...all at their best bombing forward at pace where they dont have to consider 12 different passing options. All of them are terrifying at full gallop.

I understand it's not always black and white, but it just seems to me we are more deadly at a faster pace.

based on games like today and Wolfsburg away then yes, cant just sit back to play that game though as better teams than today will create and take more chances, but to break at speed every time the opportunity arises will punish teams... its something we didnt do last week and opted to pass it around the back.

Kone was like Martin 'Chariots' Offiah when he took off, and the final ball was an absolute peach.

Undoubtedly yes. The best we've looked with this squad of players was during the first few months of Martinez's reign here and... well, today. All based on counter attacking.

Right, not just me then. Good to know.

We can dream of a Spanish #10 who is probably named Godot. Or we can play like we did today and win 3-0.

It's hard to counter when other teams won't play against us. Getting as many bodies behind the ball as they can.
Southampton came to play today and we outplayed them.

It's not just countering either - we're simply better when we attack with pace and get the ball up to the final third quickly.

Said this ahead of the game when I saw the team sheet.

If we played direct today we'd have a chance of winning this with that side.

There's no reason why we can't do similar at Goodison even when teams drop deep to try and frustrate us. The slow, ponderous build up gets us absolutely nowhere and needs to be ditched.

Its not just that Southampton came to play. We were effective because we had runners from midfield today. The movement was excellent in the final third whereas its normally non existent. I thought Kone was excellent and absoloutely needs to keep his place on the pitch

Yep, got all the players we need to successfully rip open teams on the reg. Get that playmaker and hopefully our home-possession based games will feel a little different too!

Yes.

But you can't counter attack against WBA, Watford, Sunderland, Stoke + others when they drop deep and park the bus.

That's why we still need a playmaker, for teams who don't have a go at us.

Utd under Ferguson is what we need to aim for, possession based side who can counter if some team is stupid enough to have a go at us.
