Are managers more important than players?

now you're gonna hear about it
Obviously you need good players to win, but what makes a team more likely to win consistently: good manager or good players?

Or put another way: are you more likely to win something with great players and an average manager, or average players and a great manager?

There's so many factors involved that it's difficult to give a straightforward answer, but generally I think a top manager is the catalyst for success.

It is the manager who chooses the tactics the team should plater, instils confidence and manages individual egos into a cohesive team.

Just look at recent situations of how much influence managers can have on a team's performance: José at Chelsea; van Gaal and even our own.

A great manager can inspire players to work collectively which will lead to success. Talented players helps this, but it's almost like a multiplier.

For example looking at Everton, Martinez had the foundations of a good squad from Moyes and made them work much better than before.

Now though, an even better squad is struggling. Would a better manager be able to utilise their obvious abilities to make success? We'll see...

If you have a team like barcelona or celtic in the spl then no its not essential. If you're anyone else its critical.
Barcelona didn't win the title in 2011/12 or 13/14. You could also argue with Real's quality that they should be competing for the the title.

Great squads make it much, much easier for success as I mention, although the manager is the final component that leads towards success.

You've also got the European element where their managerial abilities may be more of a factor.

It can't be too hard to manage neymar messi and suarez lol. They are unstoppable atm. Far better than the years you mention.

But yea obviously managers are crucial. And in the current climate of footballers largely being absolute bells of the highest order, its become more and more important.

Won't discount what happens in La Liga, but given the financial structure it's more of a question of who will lose the title than who will win. I suppose this question is more relevant to PL and Serie A than La Liga, Ligue 1, or Bundesliga, but that's an interesting point.

An average manager CAN make great players poorer, by not playing them properly.(eh Roberto)
A great manager can improve the results gained by average players.

But there is no magic formula/recipe. as shown by Kendall II & III...and (IMOH) a bit of luck never hurts...as in Kendall got a couple of near full seasons out of previous serial sick-notes, Reid, Sheedy and Gray.

A great manager with average to good players can win the league - see SAF

Probably one of the few managers who prove the rule though. Ferguson won the league with some awful plop, it has to be said. The same can't be said for a lot of the current flavours of the month. Mourinho is obviously a man who has a gigantic impact on his squad too tbf.
