It's exactly like that, with the difference being that the other guy committed ten years of his life, rather than the several hours a day I spent for a year.

If the guy accepted the fact that the only thing he controls is his own performance, and that he had performed to the best of his ability and therefore won despite finishing fourth, he'd be a lot happier.

Just making the Olympics is a monumental accomplishment. I have a cousin who got close. She'd swap places with that guy in a heartbeat.

Who are we to tell somebody how to react, if they are not hurting anybody then surely we cannot sit here and judge them on their emotions. This is where the mental health aspect comes from.

Everybody reacts differently to different situations. You had Fiji's rugby sevens crying before the final, you had hockey players crying that they did not get a medal, you had Dina Asher-Smith crying that she got injured, along with Gemili, we have seen tears in failure & success and it is a beautiful thing in its own way. We have seen people not cry in the face of failure, in front of the camera, who knows how much they cried off camera and in private or with loved ones, and that is brilliant to be strong in front of the public but we should not be admonishing people for showing a bit of weakness in that moment.

I will repeat what I said earlier, who are we to question the emotions of another human in such a way. That is where the stigma comes in, that is where the shame comes in, that is where the mental breakdowns come in.

I’m not going to put someone on blast for being genuine. You never know what is going on off the field. For some sports are a way to cope with some messed up ish and you’d never know it.
