PC gone mad or legit complaint about stereotypes ? The Simpsons creators seem to think its pc gone mad judging by their response whereas the guy who voices the character seems to want to distance himself from the shows response and is more sympathetic towards those taking offence.

Im guessing it will be hard for most non Indian people to see what the problem is but I can remember some Indian kids getting mocked at school for their accents and being called 'Apu'. Can imagine it happening a lot, especially in the US.

I can imagine some will say that other characters are also stereotyped such as the Scottish character but then others will argue that there is no targeted racism against Scottish people in the same way there is against Indian people.

Thoughts ?

It's called comedy. The Simpsons lampoon and stereotype everything and anything. It's not offensive if they're sending up everything in the same way. You have lower class Americans lampooned as roadkill eating incestuous idiots, you have a police chief literally depicted as a pig etc. etc.

It's yet another example of people finding things to moan about because social media exists and they need to complain like a hivemind about whatever they can. The world is proper crap.

People have been complaining about his character since the early 2000's tbh, long before social media existed

Thank you, come again

It's a weird mix of right and wrong. The Simpons came out in 1989, and while Apu was still offensive then, that was part of the joke. Current cultures no longer tolerate the joke. And the show is still running, but it's not like the show is really "current" so far as culture is concerned--none of the characters have aged and so few have changed from how they were originally cast.

So Apu is clearly offensive today, but it's unreasonable to ask The Simpsons to change the show. It will probably just go away (unfortunately).

Before anyone blames this nonsense on "millennials" then don't. As funny as it can sometimes be to blame all the ills of the world on us this one's nowt to do with us. Most millennials love the Simpsons, we grew up with it. The perpetually outraged rent a mob fit into all age groups and just go looking for things to bitch about. This is their latest laughable crusade and frankly is a joke that it's even gone this far. They should be told to F off and carry on the show as normal. I doubt one single person from India cares one tiny bit about all this nonsese. It's yet more fools being outraged on behalf of other people who couldn't care less.

Strawmanning it a bit there mate, plenty of Indian people have complained over the years but at the same time that doesn't mean all of them or even a majority of them are offended by it or care. One of the main people behind the current criticism (Hari Kondabolu) is Indian American as well... ironically he got a ton of racial abuse directed at him for bringing this up.

Just dont get why a cartoon character that speaks in an accent close to real life in Merica is offensive.

I have given up remembering how many times I have been the butt of scouse based "observations", and been asked to "Calm Down".
