I'm confused. I have a macbook pro and a cable that connects it to an HDMI socket on my TV - can apple tv do something that my existing set-up can't?

apple tv ,what exactly does it do.

get plex media server, a decent broadband connecton and a nas.

that's all you need.

apart from a decent android phone.

I got apple TV a couple of weeks ago as it was only $89 (about 40 pound).
So, what is the best way to utilise it. I'm hoping it does more than just play whatever is on my iPod on the TV.
All suggestions welcome (and willing to accept PMs if required

Plex media server is literally all you need.

Also, if you pay for a subscription on it, about £1.70pm ish, you can create your own accessible server. So, for example, I can burn my own Blu Rays to my drive (or get them however you wish), sit it on my server, and anybody I invite to my server can access it through the Broadband. Like creating my very own Netflix server. Also means that using the Plex app on any of my devices give me access to any of the box-sets/films/personal media that I have, from just about anywhere in the world. Similar to a Sky Go plus account, with better content and cheaper.

Can't really blame them tbh. It costs something like £50-60 a month to get Sky with the Sports package.

If you could airplay Sky Go, then something like 4 or 5 people could share 1 sky go account, watch the football on their 55" TV's, and Sky would lose a fortune.

Forgive my ignorance, but from reading that it appears that by buying an appletv device I can render my £6 HDMI cable obsolete?

Exactly why I don't bother with Apple TV.

Pointless
