My wife was over in Blighty recently and got an old Iphone off her son. Its on the 02 network and worth about £500, so be a shame to see it go to waste. Neither of us know squat about Iphones and we tried her normal sim from her phone on the Irish meteor network. No luck. NADA. We don’t want to sign up for 02 as have really bad experiences with them in the past. Is there a way of configuring the phone to suit the sim that she uses on her regular phone?

Advice appreciated. Its an Apple Iphone, that’s all I know and has no connection lead to the pc, which is not a normal USB anyway - just all she got off her son was the charger with the phone.

hit it with a hammer!!
in all seriousness, pop into a phone shop (dog and bone/phone doctor etc..) and they should be able to unlock it

Unlock you say? Like carphone warehouse? I really have no clue of these matters. I have an old 2007 sony myself, the missus has an Android - we really are not gadget wise TBH. But we have a local carphone warehouse, will check that out. Cheers.

no, not the carphone warehouse or any phone shops like that, i mean shops that fix/buy old phones/sell gadgets etc... there's usually a sticker on the window saying "phone unlocking available here" and basically they can unlock the phone so it works on your current network :)

There is a guy here does that, he charges the earth for unlocking. I'll wait till she goes back to England, way cheeper over there to unlock. Like, how much would expect to pay to unlock a phone? I want to hear your answer before you hear what it costs this end -- be seated when I tell you.

What type of iPhone

I have no idea, a nice big screen, very plain. And yeah, 50 spots to get a phone unlocked this end. The English whine about prices in your own country; I know you do as half my family are English. Try living here for a reality check. Ireland is a total rip off. A decent loaf of bread coverted into Sterling costs about £1.80, a 2 LTR of milk costs in your money about £1.40.

Phone O2 and ask them to unlock it. If it's unlocked in a shop or a side street etc, it might just be a temporary unlock. Basically means when you run an update on the OS it will lock again

O2 will usually unlock it for a small fee, think it's about a tenner or something. I've done it when I gave my own iPhone away to a friend who was on a different network.

If your phone is an iPhone 4 or 4S, you'll need a micro sim. You can get one from your current phone provider by phoning them and asking them to send out a MicroSim as a replacement to your existing sim.

Okay. Is it plastic or glass

Yes, but this is Ireland, and I tried that many moons ago with a phone my wife bought off 02 back in 2010 - they are scum, no leeway, refused to unlock it. Utter scum. She had switched to their network and then got sense. That's why I would not entertain going near an 02 shop. Besides, they are all nearly shut now, as people have wised up to their thievery and they are nearly non existent over here. No surprise, awful dealing with them.
