ANZAC Day

Usta get biccies brought into the staffroom by the Aussie teachers at our school. Made for a nice day.

Then their economy outstripped ours, our pay stagnated (aka the tories got elected) and they all went home leaving just memories of biscuits.

Happy Anzac Day to all from Istanbul. The battle in Gallipoli was fierce but it made two nations even closer after 101 years, as Atatürk said these words for Anzac mothers:

"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well."

Didn't realize this was something to 'celebrate'.

To many New Zealanders and Australians, 25 April represents the birth of a national identity. Considering that a disproportionately high number of ANZAC's were in the service of the British Empire on the other side of the world in two world wars especially, that is something to be proud of.

Its about having pride in, and respect for, our people in the services, not neccesarily the politics of why some of those same people were sent to war. No-one calls it a "celebration".
