I've just sprayed down the wheels to try and get some of the dirt out.

It's either dirt that's got between the pad and disc or the pad is worn down to the metal. Most modern cars have brake pad warning indicators so it's almost certainly the former. If it doesn't clear within a few days take it into a main dealer.
