I'm thinking of doing an MA in the above subject by distance learning to engineer a change in direction in my career. At the moment the desire to study that is born out a pure interest in the subject, but I'm still unsure what kind of job opportunities would come up afterwards. Just wondering if anyone here has studied that and what they are doing now? Cheers

What sort of work is there in that area? And I suppose more pertinantly, do you live where that kind of work is?

From what I have read so far, mainly Government and Public administration, journalism, international organisations etc. I've only really just started researching everything. From those, journalism is a dying occupation and international organisations are quite difficult to get into. From what I've read graduates from this subject can also go into business but that's kinda the area i wouldn't mind to get out of.

I live in Germany so will have to check out what is available here.

That's what I'd have thought too. Not sure about Germany but I suspect most of those kind of roles here are in London. Are they similarly focused around Berlin in Germany?

Yes in the UK it would be for the most part in London I believe. For Germany I would need to check first to be sure but I would hazard a guess at Berlin and possibly also Bonn.

I've not studied International Relations academically however I often come across people who have similar qualifications as you are considering.

Most work for Governments, NGO's and other international no-profit organisations like the major charities. Only occasionally do I come across such people in the private sector, usually in the field of consulting but every so often some of the multi-nationals will have similarly qualified people.

It's an interesting area but I would view it as complimentary to any existing skills, qualifications or experience you may have. Without a significant additional skill set I can only see it having limited applications and attractions to employers.

Oh one last thing, a willingness to travel and be located in different parts of the world would also be expected

If Scotland gains independence there will be a few roles available in Edinburgh! :drunk:
Let's hope it doesn't get to that, but that'a different topic.

I've never seen anyone study it on its own, but I've got a few mates who study business/management and IR, and in uni here you can take it as an extra curriculum activity for everything - a friend of mine is doing Electronic and Mechanical Engineering with that... Lots of travelling apparently.

But anyway @the esk explained it like a boss.

Travelling and relocating are an attraction to me tbh. And yeah I understand it being more a complementary skill. That is especially true if looking for a way into the NGO field I guess. Quite like the sound of becoming a political analyst - I think I'll look into that.
