No beer, no drugs, no selling out, no conforming to the norms of society.

Must be extremely difficult IMO to live such a lifestyle.

The "promiscuity not allowed" would have been a problem 20 years ago but I reckon I could cope with that now. But if they still have a "no caffeine" rule then count me out

I've been thinking of converting for some time now you see. I quite like the thought of having a decent excuse to not drink any longer, especially as alcohol is now so expensive. Saying "it's too expensive for me" is quite weak.

I don't drink, never tried drugs and never smoked. I live a healthy lifestyle and I love the feeling of always being at an advantage over other human beings.

If you don't wanna drink, don't? (Or grow a beard & recite verses from the Koran- seems about as an extreme as going straight edge).
couldnt give up the foof though, lid...

just say you are alcohol intolerant- there is such a thing.

You're more of a conformist by following a rigid scene like that than if you're just a normal bloke like most of us.

Just cut down your drinking, mate. I went from being borderline-alcoholic to supping 2 or 3 beers every couple of weeks. Developing hobbies helped a lot (outside of watching football in pubs, I mean). And developing a connoisseur's taste was the other thing which helped. Means I enjoy one or two expensive beers or whiskey at home once every coupla weeks, instead of drinking any old shyte in the pub with mates and getting trashed. Those days were ultra-fun, but aren't meant to be forever.

Willpower is a very underrated strength we all have, just that we hide behind excuses a lot of the time that we forget how much we can actually control our lives.

I'm as guilty as everyone else...started smoking again after 5 years off and still not done important paperwork months after it's due.

But cutting down on alcohol? You can do it, lad, and it's a hell of a lot easier than joining a regime like Straight Edge. Unless you've crossed into true alcoholism, that's a dark place and a whole other ball game.

Straight Edgers get their buzz from following the regime. They get their buzz from the perceived 'purity' of it. Just like those who follow religions.
