Full frame and L glass is the way to go but be prepared to sell your first born. If you plan to make money the 5DS is stunning and lenses like the EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM for landscapes, a prime telezoom lens for your racing, and depending on how close you wanna go the the macro is the 100L or the 5:1 MP-E 65 (full manual lens).
Money is the object - if you have it, you'll load up your bag with genius equipment. If you want 50mm then the f/1.2L is the real choice.
Cheers Bilbo, whilst the budget isn't limitless, the camera budget will undoubtedly be lower than the racing budget was. I'm in no rush so can take my time weighing up options but the idea is for fun, I'm sure there re lots of very handy snappers already in the market touting for business so it will be purely for pleasure.
I'll be buying the body secondhand probably, what age should I not consider to go older than (if you think this is an issue).
I showed my 7yr old many of your bug photos, she was a bit scared at first but then found them fascinating.
