In a nutshell, I've been watching golf on TV for many years. I've never played it. It seems like a bit of a tricky game to get into for a beginner. What's a fair estimate for how much cash you need to spend on your first set of clubs? Is buying second hand a bad idea?

No problem with a second hand set at all.
Its a tough game but very enjoyable once you can play it. I love it

I occasionally go with friends from work... Some play regularly.

End up looking for the ball in the bushes most the time.

Drinking afterwards is ok though, although some of the golf lot clearly take themselves too seriously

You'd get a 2nd hand set of irons for under a ton. Speak to either the golf pro in your local club or golf shop and they can recommend what clubs to get - blades v more forgiving clubs etc.

Defo get a few lessons if you've never played just to get the basics of stance and swing and then just practice as much as you can.

You're not gonna make the tour at this stage so dont worry about mistakes, just try and enjoy it and take your time. Golf is not a game best played at pace.

EDIT: spend your money on the shoes, you'll be in them for about 5 hours so make sure they are comfy!

Some good advice thus far regarding lessons and second hand clubs. It’s good to take some lessons before you build up some bad habits with your swing. I’ve been playing for about 30 years on and off.

Always keep one old spare club in ye bag so when you knob one 6 yards off the 1st tee you can wrap the spare club around the nearest tree!

Invest in a few lessons from a club pro. I thought I was an ok golfer, but just one lesson from a professional player I knew was an eye opener.
This! I've been playing on and off for a year's, had my 1st proper lesson last week and had best 2 rounds of my life. Its a great game once you can hit a ball

Just DM me with your other half's mobile number and a timetable of the many days you will be abandoning her at home and I will add her into my schedule.

Local teaching pro will probably have a set of clubs you can use, particularly if you book say 5 or 10 lessons.

Quite a few golfers trade in sets of clubs for the latest and greatest (with very little effect, that's another story) so you should easily get a decent set for a fraction of the cost new.

It can be frustrating but very satisfying. You can have a horrific day but ONE good shot on the last hole makes you keen to head out again.

Edit: also, ask a mate to lend you or even buy ANY knackered single club. After your first lesson, even if your sat watching telly have it gripped correctly so it becomes perfectly natural for the next lesson (and every subsequent time you play) Wonky Grip? Don't even bother.

Second hand is fine, but check the grips, if they are worn get them replaced. Also the grooves, if they are old clubs the grooves might not be deep enough. Check the shops at golf clubs, for example if you live near the Wirral try the Wallasey shop, but dont buy second hand from ebay. See if you go one of them shops you can get a lesson too from someone who will help with basics like you stance

Exactly this. Get the lessons before you ingrain all your faults. I thought golf would be easy, played for a couple of years without having a lesson. When I had my first lesson, I realised what a big mistake I had made. It's very difficult to change anything once it is 'ingrained'.
