Sona

Player Valuation: £8m
So, it looks as though this one is a certainty; player is out-of-contract at the former Club of our new manager where he featured regularly.

How would everyone feel about this signing?

Looking at the positives:

1. No transfer fee

2. Provides cover for the first team

3. Familiar with Martinez and his formation (should he choose to use it)

4. Experienced international (24 appearances for Paraguay)

5. Has Premier League experience

6. Played 90 minutes in a winning Cup Final team and kept a clean sheet

Looking at the negatives:

1. Wages and agents fees

2. Might stunt development of our young players (e.g. Duffy)

3. Turns 31 next month meaning little or no re-sale fee

4. Dodgy behavioural issues; banned for spitting at Richard Stearman in 2011

5. Was part of a defence who conceded 73 league goals last season

I think it's one of those where I wouldn't be that bothered if we signed him; never going to set the world alight, but I wouldn't be expecting him to do so. Thoughts?

Why murge? I couldn't see an Alcaraz thread?

Because there's a transfer thread for all transfer type bits mate. Stops it getting clogged up.

There's been loads of chat in there about Alcaraz. You might be interested to read mate.

My viewpoint is that Saints got Lovren and we get Alcaraz. That's not fair.

Why did he run his contract down, why did Wigan let him ?

Could be a number reasons:

1. Martinez may have told him that he'd take him with him

2. Wigan might not be able to afford his wages in the Championship

3. They have no manager; Owen Coyle may offer him a new deal and he might stay

4. He might not want to spend his final years in the Championship

Ok mate, I see your point. I do read that thread religiously too.

But then again, we could say that the Leroy Fer thread should be merged? I think when it's a genuine transfer rumour i.e. reported in the media by a reputed news outlet and not "I think so and so is boss, we should sign him" then it should be thread-worthy.

Never really took notice of him when he was at Wigan. Seeing the Wigan fans claiming him to be their best defender by far and Martinez clearly rating him, I'm more than willing to give him a shot

He wasn't though, really. He only started 7 games because of injury (which is a whole other potential negative in itself, like).

Good point. I just looked into this; in the 14 games he featured in this season, Wigan conceded 16 goals.

I'm not really bothered mate to be honest.

Just answered your question.

Fair enough! Sorry, I meant to bold the thread part of your response, then comment on your answer.

I agree, Lovren moving to Southampton and Okore to Villa is a kick in the teeth; even more so when we're in for Alcaraz.

I think he is an ok signing, he's on a free he's 31 and knows the manager i wouldnt expect that he will be paid all that much in the terms of footballers. I would still rather have duffy but if Heitinga does go its not bad cover for him, I would much rather be talking about Lovren cant believe we didnt go for that and southampton got him. Im pretty gutted about that
